Unplanned, the Movie
“Powerful, Poignant, and Painful.”
Sun City, AZ — Koinonia News
Koinonia News is a long-time and outspoken advocate of Life Issues. So, we were pleased to be invited last week to our local AMC theater for a viewing of “Unplanned.” Though we were warned ahead of time that the movie’s “R” rating was probably well deserved, nothing could have prepared us for this heart wrenching, emotional, and at times graphic drama.
Politics in the USA is sharply divided on the subject of abortion. Not only that, many states are polarized, there no longer seems to be a middle ground. In that understanding, the movie Unplanned is both timely and relevant to our societal discourse.
I describe Unplanned as being “Powerful, Poignant, and Painful:”
- The movie is powerful because it displays the truth of the abortion industry in an entirely unvarnished manner.
- Unplanned is poignant in that it takes you through an emotional, personal journey that is certain to touch your heart.
- Amidst the powerful and poignant emotions, Unplanned is painful to watch as they show an abortion in progress via an ultrasound. Movie goers watch on as an unborn child literally moves away, attempting to escape the abortionist’s tools.
It is the understanding of many we’ve interviewed that the creators went out of their way to present a fair representation of the abortion provider and the people who work at the clinics. The women in the clinic were made to seem like they really did believe what they were doing was morally right and that they were helping their “patients.”
No matter your your position on abortion, this is a MUST see movie. Just go, and try to have an open mind. If you are already Pro-Life, go and see that these people who work in those facilities BELIEVE they are helping and that is why they are there. If you are Pro-Choice, please go and expose yourself to a different perspective and compare that to your own reasons for your vote. If you’re unsure and just curious, GO. If anything, you’ll just reconfirm what you believe, but don’t be afraid to challenge yourself because it’s a difficult subject, and often difficult to watch. Many tears were shed at the AMC theater that evening. I myself was moved to tears several times during the film.
“By the end of the film, I was completely distraught,” one “pro-choice” viewer said. “It (the movie) prompted me to question everything I had previously believed about abortion” she said.
Though the movie is graphic at times, Koinonia News highly recommends taking your older children. The value is that important. Most young adults, especially high school and college age men and women need to see this, if only to learn the facts regarding this very troubling subject.
“Unplanned” is facing an obstacle in sharing their story. According to a recent article by the Hollywood Reporter (THR) —major networks are refusing to sell ads for the movie.
Marketers for the movie told THR that they’ve contacted numerous networks that have refused to take their advertising money for various reasons: The Travel Channel, Cooking Channel, HGTV, Lifetime, Food Network, Hallmark Channel, and USA Network.
“We were looking to spend money, but they didn’t want to get involved,” producer John Sullivan told THR.
THE STORY — from the movie website:
Unplanned is the inspiring true story of one woman’s journey of personal transformation.
All Abby Johnson ever wanted to do was help women. As one of the youngest Planned Parenthood clinic directors in the nation, she was involved in upwards of 22,000 abortions and counseled countless women about their reproductive choices. Her passion surrounding a woman’s right to choose even led her to become a spokesperson for Planned Parenthood, fighting to enact legislation for the cause she so deeply believed in.
Until the day she saw something that changed everything, leading Abby Johnson to join her former enemies at 40 Days For Life, and become one of the most ardent pro-life speakers in America
Unplanned is the most important movie you’ll ever see on the most controversial issue of our time. No matter which side of the fence you’re on, no one will leave this film unmoved by Abby’s journey.
For years we have been working with the writers of God’s Not Dead as they completed writing, directing, and producing the beautiful story of Abby Johnson leaving her job at Planned Parenthood and coming into our office. Abby’s Planned Parenthood facility was the site of the first ever 40 Days for Life campaign and now serves as the headquarters of 40 Days for Life.
